TIS THE SEASON

As we enter the beginning of winter it is time to shift gears a little for our pets. First and foremost remember to be extremely cautious with Antifreeze. If your are winterizing your vehicle, motor home, camper or jet ski be sure to exercise extreme caution with antifreeze. One teaspoon of antifreeze is sufficient to nuke your pet’s kidneys within 30 minutes. Ethylene glycol is extremely nephrotoxic and to make matters worse pets are attracted to the stuff. So be careful

The holidays are virtually here and as you prepare for family feasts remember to exercise caution with Chocolate. Pets don’t like it as much as humans, but we find an occasional dog that will kill for chocolate and amazingly we find an occasional owner who actually feeds chocolates to their dog or cat. NOT GOOD. Chocolate is metabolized into theobromide and is extremely toxic to pets. Most cases we see are accidental where people leave home with chocolate sitting out on a coffee table and the pet unexpectantly helps itself to our treats. Big trouble. Life may be like a box of chocolates, but the box of chocolates has to be kept away from our pets. In cases of accidental exposure contact your veterinarian immediately.

Speaking of The Holidays, every year we have pets present with acute onset of vomiting and diarrhea with a bad tummy ache. Owners just couldn’t resist sharing left over food with their pet. Fatty table scraps can be close to poisonous to your pet. Animals eating scraps commonly develop pancreatitis as a result of all the fat; spoiled left-overs are even worse because they have fat plus bacteria and animals getting into our garbage where this stuff gets dumped get very sick in a hurry. So, for your pets sake do not feed them Holiday left-overs, throw them away and make certain the garbage is secured so the pet is unable to access it. Besides feeding human food to our pets just serves to teach them bad eating habits and before long we have a pet that won’t eat their dry dog food and they are blackmailing us by not eating until we add special treat or gravy to their food. Do your pet a favor and throw tables scraps away!

Next the flea season in Northwest Washington is nearing its seasonal end. However, many of our clients have not been doing regular flea control through the summer months and as they warm their homes as the winter rain moves in, temperature and humidity will be just right for the flea eggs in their homes to decide to hatch. We often refer to this as a “flea bloom”. This is not like flowers blooming; it’s more like an ugly parasite for your cat or dog gearing up for a major attack. We frequently see a lot of major flea blooms in February----why? Because the heat gets turned up and it’s wet and cold outside. This year the rains have hit early and things are wet outside. So be vigilant for a flea bloom in your home. Oh, in case you haven’t heard yet, don’t waste your money on flea bombs. FDA has changed regulations on flea bombs making them impotent against fleas. However, direct application carpet sprays are still effective, so consider purchasing a direct application product to treat your home. Flea Busters remains as the safest product available for commercial treatment of your home. They will guarantee your home flea free for one year after only one application. For those of you who change your own oil and prefer to “do it yourself” we have found a product called Knock Out for direct application to carpets and furniture to rid these little buggers from your home. This product is safe and effective, heavy on the effective. It is a waste of money to purchase flea bombs at Wally World that are not only unsafe, but ineffective for treating your home.

Finally, Flea Drops. We have seen numerous cases where people have purchased generic flea drops at the grocery store or pet store. Read the label. The manufactures have packaged these products to look like Advantage®, Top Spot® or Revolution®. but they are anything but the quality products available through your Veterinarian. If you are looking at a four-month supply of flea drops for $6.00 or $8.00 realize there is something wrong. Most of these products contain concentrated permethrins. This is 30 year old technology, it didn’t work very well 30 years ago, and it doesn’t work any better now. We have had numerous cases, particularly with cats, that have reacted adversely with these products. One in particular was a cat that had been treated with “All Natural Flea Drops”. The cat presented in a coma and was hospitalized for seven days before we were able to reverse the toxic reaction to this product produced by Farnham. The All Natural product contained Sodium Laurel Sulphate, and Citric Acid. Not very natural and don’t think Farnham didn’t know it---when contacted over their toll free number the first words out of their mouth were “we will pay the vet bill”. They had virtually no practical recommendations for anetodal treatment for sick pets from their product, but they would nonetheless pay the vet bill.

Please, stay away from these products if you care for your pet. They are ineffective and dangerous. Advantage® Flea Drops are effective and safe. Ditto on Frontline® and Revolution®. See your vet. Purchase flea products from a safe source. You will spend a little more money, but your pet will be safe and more importantly protected from fleas.

I hope these tips will give you a few ideas for this winter. Remember if you have a specific question drop me a line through our web site. Have a safe and happy holiday season and take special care of your pet this year. With all the crazy things going on in the world one thing you can count on is the demonstration of unconditional love from your pet---they truly do make people happy and healthy.
